Fading Away

The small pool of water beside him bubbled like a seething caldron from the force of the pouring rain. The sight and sound of battle dimmed as the chill night closed around him, enveloping him in its unforgiving darkness, shutting him away from the coming dawn. So much of his life had been lived in the unwelcoming hours between dusk and dawn that it seemed appropriate to him that midnight bore witness to his passing. As his eyes closed, his last thought was to wonder if he'd feel the warmth of the sun through the green grass covering his grave.
